FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARRISBURG, Pa. (May 8, 2025) -- Hunger-Free Pennsylvania today announced that it has completed more than 250,000 deliveries in partnership with DoorDash’s Project DASH to local neighbors, especially homebound senior citizens, experiencing food insecurity.
“Pennsylvania’s charitable food network is working aggressively to ensure none ever go hungry,” Hunger-Free Pennsylvania Executive Director Stuart I.R. Haniff, MHA, said.
“Especially now, when resources are stretched and need is at an all-time high, it is more important than ever for us to constantly innovate and look for new ways to make sure healthy meals get to those who need it most,” Haniff said. “This partnership with DoorDash is a perfect example of how we can extend the reach of our food banks to get food on the tables of individuals and families in need.”
In September 2021, state Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding joined Pennsylvania's anti-hunger organizations and food banks to announce a new partnership with DoorDash to have healthy, nutritious meals delivered to homebound seniors in need.
Food insecurity among seniors contributes to malnutrition, which exacerbates disease, increases disability, decreases resistance to infection, and extends hospital stays. Malnutrition increases care-giving demands and inflates health-care expenditures associated with premature or extended hospital or nursing home stays.
Seniors often face barriers accessing food assistance programs because they cannot get to them or use the technology they need to access care. This partnership overcomes these barriers by delivering food boxes provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commodities Supplemental Food Program from food banks and food pantries directly to seniors' doorsteps.
In Pennsylvania, Hunger-Free administers CSFP as part of the Senior Food Box Program.
“We’re proud to celebrate over 250,000 deliveries in partnership with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania and its members,” said DoorDash's Daniel Riff, Head of Government and Nonprofit Operations.
“Working with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, Project DASH has helped get groceries to seniors, working parents, and people who experience transportation, mobility, or other challenges,” Riff said. “We’re excited to help Hunger-Free Pennsylvania meet the need locally and continue to break down barriers for neighbors experiencing food insecurity.”
In Pennsylvania, the 10 participating Hunger-Free Pennsylvania food banks include:
· Bucks County Opportunity Council, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Greater Washington County Food Bank, Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, Share Food Program, Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, Westmoreland County Food Bank, and York County Food Bank.
Combined, these food banks deliver meals in 25 counties, including:
· Adams, Allegheny, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Columbia, Crawford, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Erie, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Luzerne, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Washington, Wayne, Westmoreland, Venango and York.
Launched by DoorDash in 2018, Project DASH empowers social impact organizations – such as food banks and food pantries – to work with Dashers and use DoorDash technology to provide local delivery to their communities. Across the U.S. and Canada, Project DASH has powered more than six million deliveries of an estimated over 100 million meals, saving recipients more than five million hours of their time.
Organizations interested in expanding their existing delivery efforts or learning how delivery could enhance their programs should contact the Project DASH team at projectdash@doordash.com.
Hunger-Free Pennsylvania represents 18 food banks, serving all 67 counties in the commonwealth, and therefore and together is the largest charitable food network in Pennsylvania. For more information, visit www.pafoodbanks.org.
